The Brain Collection Today

The Institute of Brain Pathology was closed May 1, 1982.

The collected brains were saved for future research and form the present Brain Collection.

Standard tissue processing

In the neuropathological routine, the brains were sliced, and specific regions sampled and embedded in paraffin. Histological sections were cut and stained using a range of standard histochemical stains.

Brain tissue stored in formalin

The collection comprises 9437 containers with fixed brain slices.

Paraffin embedded tissue

The collection contains approximately 50,000 tissue blocks embedded in paraffin, i.e. all the blocks originally made for diagnostics.

Histological slides

Shelves containing histological slide trays. Slides from approx. 6500 patients are preserved, i.e. approx. 250,000 slides.
