In Memoriam: Professor Dan J. Stein (1962–2025)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Honorary Professor at TNU, Dan J. Stein, on 6 December.
Dan Stein served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. His research was driven by a lifelong commitment to understanding the mechanisms underlying anxiety-related disorders and improving treatment for those affected. Holding doctoral degrees in both clinical neuroscience and philosophy, his work spanned laboratory science, clinical practice, and public health. His dedication to translating research into meaningful clinical solutions earned him wide international recognition.
His scholarly achievements were extraordinary. He authored or edited more than 50 books and over 2,000 journal articles and chapters, and bibliometric analyses consistently place him among the world’s most influential psychiatrists.
Dan Stein was the Founding President of the African College of Neuropsychopharmacology (AfCNP) and fostered strong ties with the Scandinavian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (SCNP) and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP).
In early 2023, Aarhus University had the privilege of appointing him Honorary Professor at the Translational Neuropsychiatry Unit, Department of Clinical Medicine. Later that year, he delivered an inspiring invited lecture on Psychiatric Diagnosis in the Age of Neuroscience at the Educational Symposium in Psychiatry at Aarhus University Hospital. His engaging presence, intellectual generosity, and insightful discussions left a lasting impression on all who attended.
The international research community has lost a towering figure. Colleagues and friends have lost a valued companion. His family has lost a beloved husband and father. Our sincere thoughts are with his wife Professor Heather Zar, children Gabriella, Joshua and Sarah, and grandson, Rafa - to whom we extend our deepest condolences and enduring respect.
